Let's hope Paul can set a server soon. I've tested the AI and they seem way too much faster than me, maybe I'm setting it all wrong.

RE: Sim Racers 4 Life - Fun Event - 1960 Indy Roadster at Indianapolis - Keeper - 26-07-2017

The AI in the mod have too much grip, I think. I've put an oval setup on these things and still only manage low 1:03s thus far.

These go faster on the straights than the cars we raced on Sunday, but need to slow down a lot more in the corners. You can power-slide them, but you'll roast the tyres. I'll have to try a long run and see how they last. According to the original developers of the rF1 version, you could expect only about 50-56 laps on a stint. My fuel calculation thus far in rF2 seems to suggest that there's plenty of fuel to last the race (assuming I'm extrapolating correctly), so it'll be all about the tyres.

Initially I had a setup that was loose all the way through the turn. Now I'm running one that is tight in and loose off. I think I prefer the first one but I'm not sure about tyre wear, as that would really cook the right rear, like my F2 setup did.

RE: Sim Racers 4 Life - Fun Event - 1960 Indy Roadster at Indianapolis - Keeper - 26-07-2017

Addendum. I did a 60-lap run last night. The right-rear tyre had all yellow blocks by the end, and while a really smooth lap could still hit a mid- or low-1:03, most laps at the end were in the 1:04s, particularly after having spun it a couple times and getting nervous about how much throttle I could apply safely coming off the turns.

It's really a case of "race the track -- not other cars". Battling someone hard for position is just going to cost you later.

I did one lap in the 1:02s early in the run.

Interesting that the server had more grip, capable of 1:01s pretty easily.

We got lucky with a few server glitches early on that changed up the race lead a few times -- nobody materialized on top of anybody else.

Unfortunately for me I ran out of fuel with three laps to go as the server was set to dirt-track racing rules where yellow flag laps didn't count, and I didn't notice this until after we'd gone green for the third and final time. I needed another yellow to make it the extra 10 laps. I had tried to nurse it through most of the race, giving up the lead, then thought I might have enough and went for it again, but couldn't make the outside work on old tyres. Finally got a run on the inside but wouldn't have been able to make another lap, so had to pit immediately, with three laps to go. Ah well... Still ended up third. Had pole, fastest lap, led most laps I think. Managed not to spin out -- that itself is an accomplishment with these cars!

They're super fun to drive!

I shouldn't have captured the clips while Facebook was open. That may have been what caused the on-board sound to be so weird, like it's phasing itself out.

What a car!!!!
Intense race!!!
Well done to podium and all!!
Started practice very hesitantly as i hadnt raced this car before.
At the end of the practice i kind of started to learn how to take corners!
Wow!!!
Bravo to Gorka for the combo and his race!

RE: Sim Racers 4 Life - Fun Event - 1960 Indy Roadster at Indianapolis - gorgias1976 - 31-07-2017

I managed my tires pretty well. Even ended up having the four of them still in the green. I was pretty confident of my chances as I saw the cars around were laying rubber on track constantly.
After the second yellow caution I saw the race lap counter was up from 60 to 70 so I started doing maths and calculated I wasn't going to make it on this fuel. It was like 30 laps to the end and I decided I had to lift and coast if I wanted to save fuel and make it to the end. That was going to make things difficult on the battle with Ron. Most of the laps I didn't even use brakes, lifting around the numer "2" signal. That helped me cross the line with a single liter in my tank.

Brakes?????
Only touched them to avoid front car!!!

RE: Sim Racers 4 Life - Fun Event - 1960 Indy Roadster at Indianapolis - gorgias1976 - 31-07-2017

I always used brakes, before the number 1 signal for the first corner and just at the number 1 signal for the third corner. That helped me stick to the inner lane of the corners with very little effort of the tires and be very early on the throttle at the exits.

RE: Sim Racers 4 Life - Fun Event - 1960 Indy Roadster at Indianapolis - Keeper - 01-08-2017

Yeah, a little tap on the brakes could be useful, though I tended to lift just before the 1 marker and float it in, then steer with the throttle. Then lifting earlier when I realized fuel was a concern and I could afford to give up some time. Some people were locking up their fronts at the end of each straight -- that won't get the tyres to last! Avoiding any lockups and any smoky slides was the key.

As these are oval cars but they don't come with an oval setup, working out how to make a setup that only wants to turn left was important also.

It would be interesting to do a full 500-mile race (200 laps), which would require pit stops and one or two tyre changes (at least for the right side; the lefts might last the whole race).

RE: Sim Racers 4 Life - Fun Event - 1960 Indy Roadster at Indianapolis - Keeper - 01-08-2017

These cars are based on 1960, the last time the field was all front-engine cars. Here's a Mobil promotional film about the race.

It seems from the numbers they provide that our lap times are comparable to real life, but our straight-line speed is down about 15 mph.

They nonchalantly say that Eddie Russo was "reminded" about his worn tyre, failing to mention that he lost an eye in that accident and would never race again. They also don't mention that several spectators were injured when a grandstand collapsed early on. Obviously, being a promotional film, they wanted to ignore the bad stuff.

The race's record for most lead changes stood until 2012.

A 500 mile race would be a pleasure, but the main problem is that there would be just a few drivers on track.

did 200 mile race in iRacing, that took 2 hours with all the cautions. 500 would be a long slog.

RE: Sim Racers 4 Life - Fun Event - 1960 Indy Roadster at Indianapolis - Keeper - 06-08-2017

True, but I used to race in a hard-core NASCAR sim league where we ran full-length races the same as a real guys. The 600-miler was a long slog indeed.

Never did an endurance race with driver swaps, though. I think the longest sportscar race I ever did was our 2.4 Hours of Daytona, run at 10x time scale for the full day-night-day transition.
