RE: Server migration - Tygernoot - 02-05-2020

Hi all,

I don’t know if Bryan (Fergy) preferred to announce this, but he‘s currently asleep Down Under :p. He can elaborate a bit more when he wakes up Wink

As the current (virtual) server is running on a now no longer supported Windows version, we are forced to upgrade the server. I have taken on the task of performing this migration. It’s quite a bit of work, I have limited spare time (even less now with my 5-year old full time at home lol), I’m not familiar with everything that’s currently set up, and we only have one week to do it before they remove the current server. Make that 2 days, as I was swamped with work the past week... :p

So what’s going to happen the next few days?

1) I am copying all essential data, so that at least nothing gets lost when the current server is wiped out of existence Smile
2) I set up the new server to run rFactor, that we can continue to practice.
3) I set up the Live Timing that our laps continue to be stored.
4) I take down the site (forums) on Sunday evening or Monday morning and attempt to get it all running on the new server. Worst case this might take a few days, because the DNS also has to be re-pointed to the new server, and this can take up to 2 days to propagate around the world.
5) all the other crap that comes with reinstalling everything from scratch :p

Please bear with me while I undertake this bit of work. Don’t despair when the forums or servers go down and become unreachable for a while, everything is in safe hands (hum...) Wink

Thank you for your hard work. At no point say "I'll just quickly . . . . . " as computers recognise this phrase as the start of the cold road to purgatory Big Grin

Thank you very much for doing this

These tasks have the tendency to end up in a nightmare of problem searching and solving.

BEst of luck
Tobias

Hi all,

If you are reading this, it means the migration was a success, and you're now connected the brand new server Wink

Please report should you encounter any (new :p) problems.

Awesome job.
One little thing. Favicon image is missing I think.

Also we need to get back dropbox at the server. Do you Bryan know the credentials?

I'll take back Total Commander too to get quicker access to folder.

RE: Server migration - lamer of fortune - 05-05-2020

Congrats!

RE: Server migration - Tygernoot - 05-05-2020

Still some errors popping up on the forum when sending personal messages. The messages are actually sent, but email notifications don’t work yet. Looking into it Smile

RE: Server migration - 1959nikos - 05-05-2020

Im in, even with my Windows 7 64 bit.
Thank you sir.

RE: Server migration - Tygernoot - 05-05-2020

You should really considering upgrading in that case, no more security updates for Win7 coming out Smile

Think I fixed the email notification now. The forum is running on the latest version.

That'll do for upgrades and changes this week, unless it's really urgent. I need to get back on track tomorrow for some urgent league practice :p
