Hi Guys some feedback for you on my experience with Steam .
As I stated in an earlier post the HD where all my RF2 files were stored failed on me , restoring it through Steam appeared very easy , I just reloaded RF2 and Steam downloaded all my files installed and verified them , in single player all my cars and tracks were available and things appeared to have gone well , but , on checking the contents of the packages folder it was empty , where the single player was getting its info I dont know .
The inventory manager showed all my cars / track etc as installed but the actual package was was shown as not there , this meant I could not uninstall or delete any car / track or mod .
I guessed that Steam must have misloaded so I uninstalled and went through the same again but got exactly the same result
I then decided uninstall everything and to just download the game only , nope Steam would not let me , it insisted on downloading all my files as well , figured this was to do with workshop so I unsubscribed from everything uninstalled and tried again , same thing happened it supposedly downloaded all my files , my next train of thought was there maybe a hidden record in Steam itself , couldnt find anything in the steam folders so decided to uninstall Steam , this I did , reinstalled and tried again , same thing happened .
No way could I install just the basic game or block the download of my files , fortunately the bad HD can be read for a few minutes at a time until it gets warm , so I have slowly managed to copy my files into the packages folder , once there the inventory manager can see and recognise they are there and I get control back , I can delete or uninstall again .
My recommendation based on this experience is you dont trust Steam , make your own backups to another disk , backup your packages folder and player files , I thought all my setups had gone but Steam did back those up .
Backup guys , my HD gave no warning symptoms it just rolled over and died , the HD is only 2 years old and was well ventilated , sods law my other older discs are all fine .

Sounded like a headache. Thanks for the heads up.
Sometimes hard drive manufacturers have a 3-year guarantee, hope you can send it back.

I empty my packages folder after I have installed the mods so in my case when my old gaming Laptop died. I just installed it all on my new Desktop and Laptop no problem. I can still uninstall stuff, I guess though your plan was to install in later when needed, which I can't do unless I hunt out the files. That said while I still have space I keep all installed, mind you I think my packages folder was getting rather bloated before I started deleting them.
