SR4L Xmas Time Trial!

Fancy a bite-sized challenge this Christmas? Need to scratch that racing itch but festive commitments getting between you and an afternoon in your rig?

Join us over the next couple of weeks* for a Christmas Cracker (apologies) of a SR4L Just4Fun special - Nordschleife 2.4 Bridge-to-Gantry Time Trial in the F1 Legends cars…

Our very-own DJCruicky has created a unique version of the Nordschleife track based on the classic tourist layout. No need for a warmup lap - the timer starts as soon as you pass under the bridge just beyond the pits and ends at the advertising gantry part way down the main straight (hopefully) less than ten minutes later… You have to pass through the pits to start a lap - hence this is a Time Trial and not a conventional hotlap competition.

League members should note that vehicle choice is free - you are *NOT* required to stick with your league car.
Note - The Britus 49 is excluded from the available car list.

Sounds good?
It gets better! There’s a cherry on this Christmas cake… PRIZE(s)!

At the complete discretion of the race director (*not* Michael Masi, before anyone asks… :eekSmile there will be at least one prize up for grabs for qualifying drivers (see criteria below). A 1:43 scale model of the ‘winning car’ will be awarded on behalf of SR4L to the driver with the quickest valid time prior to midnight 31st December 2021 (UK time) who meets the qualifying criteria set out in the post below.

Have fun - and good luck - and a happy Christmas and New Year from all at SR4L!

Prize Qualification Criteria (Only one criterion required):
i) Driver has completed at least three rounds of any of the following league competitions (Rounds 1-4 of F1 Legends '21/'22 league, 1973 Porsche 911 RSR Series) - or,
ii) Driver has completed at least one Wednesday Night Fun Race between December 1st and 15th) - or,
iii) Driver is a member of the SR4L admin team

If you are unsure if you qualify for a prize award, please PM @Mr Fox (Myles7) for discrete verification.

For clarity - the time trial is open to anyone - but only drivers meeting the above criteria are eligible for prize awards. Please also note that the time trial server may remain open into the new year, but only times recorded in 2021 qualify for prize awards. Prize awards will be announced ASAP in 2022 once validated.

Drivers are requested (but not required) to preserve and share on request a copy of the rf2 replay (.VCR) file for their best lap - let’s see how it’s done!

Finally, the decisions of the Race Directors are final, the terms of this event may be subject to change and the usual SR4L etiquette and driving standards rules apply.

TECHNICAL

- For technical reasons, the server is set for 90-minute Practice sessions with NO Qualy/Warmup and a three-minute (!) race duration. If a session times out after a driver has started a timed lap, they can complete the lap if they wish - the server will NOT restart mid-lap.
- Drivers may vote to restart the weekend to make best use of available time - but please *ONLY* do this if all active drivers are stationary in the pits.
- It is not possible to run the server without a race entirely so please either wait for the three minutes to time out or vote for next session.

To keep things fair, the track does NOT rubber-in so no-one will gain an advantage at the end of a busy session (track is set to ‘medium’ rubber). The pit-lane speed limit is also deliberately set quite low (45mph) so that (warmer tyres aside), drivers will not gain an advantage from passing through the pitlane compared to a single lap.
Lap times recorded on or after a pit lane speeding incident has been recorded will be disregarded unless the incident occurred on pit entry and the driver quits and restarts from the monitor.

To make this a bit *more* of a challenge, damage is set to 100% to reward clean, tidy driving.

Thank you for doing this Myles, I will have to give it a try soon Smile.

Here are some setups to try , note i set my wheel for 260 deg so these are set for that

RE: Xmas Just4Fun (or is it?) Time Trial event - PRIZE ANNOUNCEMENT. - deecee52 - 24-12-2021

I have updated the lotus setup here it is . To get the best out of this car you have to keep the revs 8k or above , the engine has a narrow power band and is gutless below 8k with not a lot of torque available .

RE: Xmas Just4Fun (or is it?) Time Trial event - PRIZE ANNOUNCEMENT. - Myles (Mr Fox) - 24-12-2021

NEW PRIZE ADDED!

SR4L are proud to announce an additional prize will be awarded for the Xmas Time Trial!

A SECOND 1:43 SCALE MODEL!

Feel you have no chance in the hotlap shoot-out?
Is finishing an entire lap of the Nordschleife Bridge-to-Gantry layout a challenge and an achievement in itself?
Cat jumped on your lap just as you were about to take the top-slot?

Not a problem - you can STILL WIN A PRIZE!

In addition to the prize for the fastest lap, all qualifying drivers* will be entered into a lottery** to win a model of the vehicle they set their fastest time with.

* Qualifying criteria (i.e. previous championship/fun-race rounds completed - plus competition period, etiquette, pit lane limit rules etc.) is the same as for the main prize
** Names of all qualifying drivers (excluding the driver awarded the main prize) will be placed in a hat from which one driver will be selected at random to be awarded the prize.

As before: the decisions of the Race Directors are final, the terms of this event may be subject to change and the usual SR4L etiquette and driving standards rules apply.

Good Luck!

But the Lotus is disallowed, right?

The Lotus 49 is not available - but the Lotus 43 is…

RE: Xmas Just4Fun (or is it?) Time Trial event - PRIZE ANNOUNCEMENT. - Myles (Mr Fox) - 01-01-2022

The time trial server will remain live for a while but the prize entries were frozen at midnight. Over 1000 lap attempts were recorded but the true figure is higher as several drivers failed to record a complete lap and so don’t show up on the LiveRacers leaderboard.

Congratulations to @DJCruicky for the fastest recorded time. It might look close at the top of the board (Jonathan’s 7:10 is only around 1% slower than DJCs) but those last few seconds were remarkably hard to find.

The lottery prize winner will be announced ‘shortly’ - @Fergy will draw a name from a hat at random after the qualifying driver list is verified. Good luck!

Thank you, it was fun. Thank you for setting it up Smile. I found a small bit of extra time at the end to keep me in front.
Good luck to everyone else in the random draw.

If you’d like to share your nuggets of wisdom, I’m sure it would be well received! Deecee said I was over-driving the car, but other than a few key corners, I couldn’t see where restraint won out over bravery…

If you still have one of your fast lap replays, zip it up and I will merge it with my fast lap. Then you can analyse to your hearts content where you are losing time.
As for setup, I never touched it apart from fuel.

I’ll check - and also ask Jonathan if he still has one.

There you go.
I made 4 files.

S1 = you have a head start and I overtake you at sector 1
S2 = you have a head start and I overtake you at sector 2
Start = We both start at the same time
Fin = You have a head start and we synchronize at the finish

Thanks for that - I’ll check them out tomorrow. Jonathan might like something similar if you wouldn’t mind - I’ll nudge him to dig his replay out. Cool

Very very close between you guys , the only difference i think i can see is that DJs car has slightly more oversteer which comes into play in the twisty bits of the very early part and last 3rd of the lap , Myles you had a massive lead at the start which DJ erroded through the early twists and turns , through the faster parts there was nothing between you both , to my eyes it appears DJ was able to get the power in just that little bit faster which added up where the bends came at you quicker .

RE: Xmas Just4Fun (or is it?) Time Trial event - PRIZE ANNOUNCEMENT. - Myles (Mr Fox) - 03-01-2022

Wow. Yes, there's very little in it when you view it like that.

With standard gearing, DJ never uses 1st and only uses 5th once, I think. I'd 'optimised' my gearing as with what is effectively a rolling start, you can afford to lengthen 1st to the point where it is usable in low speed corners and shorten 5th so that it also comes into play. I'm not sure that the extra gear changes and torque demands helped in terms of low speed traction though.
