RE: Brianza Summary by Wim - Fergy - 16-09-2013

Big thanks to Wim for taking the time to write this race report for round 1 Brianza.

Great effort Wink

Finally, round one of the SR4L F1 league!
Many have been waiting for this moment, going through the tough but fun process of F3, F2……now it’s here; they have come to tame the beasts!

All gathered; long time members, fresh members – fast members, faster members – novice members, pro members. All to see what will happen in this new season; will the “chain of command” be any different? Who will beat the reigning champion?

Now it’s here.
This is it.
Grown men will cry.

Qualification,
It’s close; 22 drivers within seconds.
Bart takes P1 first, but Marcel says otherwise and takes P1 to never let it go.
Gorka is missing in the top of the list, he’s on P13, slowly making his way up to make it to P3 in the end.
After the gap Marcel has, there are 8 driver within 0,8 seconds; talking about close!
Last two minutes, almost everyone is out there, trying to get the best spot.
Nikos takes the bull by the horn and sets his car on P11, leaving the top 3 untouched; Marcel Wiegers, David Cruickshank and Gorka Santisteban rule there and in that order.
Not less than 7 cars drove in the 25 seconds, Yerke has the honor to close that list.

Race 1,
There was some mayhem at the start of race 1; guys mildly touching each other had big consequences………cars going all over the track; this is what these beasts do became soon clear.
A lineup of three cars from Gorka, David Cruickshank and Bart seem to start it all. Through the smoke comes Bryan; just going straight through it, not touching anything…….he should have bought a lottery ticket!
David Coyne also comes round the mayhem and seem to stay untouched too.
Nikos is not that lucky; there where Bart, Gorka, John, Jesus, Cosimo and David Cruickshank pit, he limps back to pit with what seems to be a broken suspension.
Another lucky one to avoid the mayhem is Hectari, only to take the guardrail for a guidance barrier at lap two; he has to pit.
The top of the list is now: Marcel Wiegers, David Coyne and Bryan Ferguson.

The leader pits at lap 10. Right then we see Nikos has made it back to the pits; he won’t be released until lap 12. Bryan pits too in lap 10, coming back in P4; Hectari is in between Coyne and Ferguson and doesn’t have to pit again!
When David Coyne pits one lap later, he keeps his spot.
Gorka makes a mistake in lap 6, lowering the chances of a good finish.
Bryan has a strange moment at lap 19; it seems to be lag and he ends up in the grass, hugging trees. He drives off again with the suspension damaged, only to pass the pits and drive on; he looses 2 spots and makes sixth still.
Then Marcel takes the flag first, followed by David Coyne and Hectari.

Race 2,
Race two features the reversed grid; one would think the mayhem will be even bigger.
But no; there are some accidents, but less than the first race.
Jesus finds himself crossing the track in a way doesn’t want as a result of a touch. This incident makes David Cruickshank a victim amongst others.
We also see Cook and Hectari using the track in a way they hadn’t been thinking before the race and we see Marcel sneaking through; he seems to get out of it unharmed with only a mild touch.
Mister lucky Ferguson again gets through but his luck soon runs out; he meets a slow driving Jesus who brakes early due to damage supposedly. It could be lag too, but Bryan runs into him and has to lookup the pitcrew. He’s not alone; Hectari, Neela and David Cruickshank join him.

Meanwhile Mel Fisk is running in front during the accidents at the start, looking at it in his mirrors. Those same mirrors show Gorka closing in at the end of lap one. Gorka is in a hurry and steers the Dark Side machine past Mel, taking P1.
Gorka, Mel and Bart make up the top 3 with Marcel closing in; he’s in P9 already.
He is doing some nice going around as he reaches P5 at lap 5. Meanwhile Bart takes a spot from Mel. However; Mel gets a spot back at lap 7 as Gorka looses it at the Lesmos and again seeing his chances of a good finish go up in smoke.
Mel meets Streppone who has made a mistake at lap 9, severely slowing him down and giving Marcel a chance to pass him; Marcel doesn’t have to think twice!
It’s now; Bart, Marcel and Mel making top 3.
Minding his own business, doing his thing and doing it well probably, we find Nikos driving at P4, coming from P9.
He must have been scared when Marcel Thumbas tries to outbrake him in a attempt to unlap himself, only to put himself in the green stuff but missing Nikos.
Nikos gets P2 for a moment but pits and falls back to 11th.
There are some quick chances in the race order as many make a stop right now; we see Gorka back at P6 all of the sudden.
David Coyne meets Mallis and Streppone as they touch at lap 9, taking severe damage and ending his race.
Bart, Marcel, Hectari for P1,2 and 3 while David Cruickshank is at P9 after his accident at the start.
George Mallis looses it in the first corner, failing to keep his FF f1 team machine out of the barrier and looses his right front wheel. He is determined to make it back to pitroad as he limps al the way back. Before he gets there, he’s passed by Nikos who takes P10 from him at the end of lap 14.
Two laps later, David Cruickshank makes a move on John Cook and succeeds; he’s now at P7; the spot where he will finish, two places in front of Nikos who sets his machine at P9.
Front runners are still Bart, Marcel and Hectari, doing some good business for their championship ambitions.
