Sim Racers 4 Life welcomes you to round 8 - Season 4 of our Historic's League. This round we visit Indy for our next event to get a taste of the dangerous lives oval racers are used to.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway is an icon historic track, constructed in 1909, still using its original layout, boasting the title of the highest-capacity sports venue in the world, as it can seat up to 400.000 people.
Considered relatively flat by American standards, it is too a flat out place, you wont be needing anything than 5th gear after the start, probably you wont use much of your brakes either Wink

SR4L wishes you good luck for this event.

IMPORTANT
1) At rolling start, keep formation till Green Flag is announced, DONT pass other vehicles before that, even if Safety Car has entered pits.
2) Exit pits through the "pit out" lane until AFTER turn 2, and enter onto the back straight.
3) Enter pits at entrance BEFORE 3rd corner, keeping left at back straight shows you are intending to enter pits.

I'm experiencing a massive tyre wear (obviously at FR) but don't know if it's because of my setup or it's just normal.

Of course right side will suffer more, but I think you should try to add some oversteer to get similar tyre wear both front and rear.

I can't set the car up for ovals, but Edwin's setup worked very well for me. Never drove more than 10 laps though, but it seemed to have even tyre wear right front and rear.

I was thinking the same before last year's Texas and it turned to be a hell of an event Smile
Please reconsider David, you will be missed.

Thank you Rikard Wink

I'll try this way, not yet confortable with my setup so far.

Edwins setup must be magic. I have to ask you for it at the server to give it a bite at other tracks.

I think it's important to remind everyone about formation lap. Drivers in odd positions (1,3,5,7,...) drive formation lap on the left side of the road and drivers in even positions (2,4,6,8...) do it on the right side and all remain on their side until "green flag" is announced.
I say this because last night I saw it was not performed too well.

Here the spotter is very helpfull. I lowered all volumes except for the spotter and he can be heared pretty well. When you are racing side by side with someone it will start telling you the side where the other car is ("inside, sinde" or "outside, outside"). When you are clear he will also tell you (a word I didn't understand).

The problem starts when guy in front doesnt stick to his side of the road.
Ive seen people that while they are advised to keep to the inside or outside, they keep wandering around, stay in the center etc.

If we all keep to our side then there will be no problem.

Have in mind though, that there will be much heat at T1, rolling start or not.
Be carefull guys, dont destroy your race and others in just first lap, there are 58 to go Wink

Totally agree.

I've seen different type of driving depending on the setup that can bring some tense action for the first laps:

Cars which lay all effort to the front right tire. The front right tire heats up quickly and therefore from the very first lap these cars have lots of grip and lap really fast. Coming around lap 5-6 they start losing momentum as they overheat that tire and lose time quickly.

Cars which are balanced in a way that weight is equally (theorically) transfered to both front and rear right tires. These cars need 2 or 3 laps to bring tires to optimun temperature lapping not as fast as the other cars at that moment.
When temperature comes if driven not too aggressive they can lap constant quick times lap after lap with no significant loss in performance.
These cars need to be driven very tidy. If driven aggresively they endup overheating the front, suffering the same problem as the first group of cars, or overheating the rear suffering from oversteer and making things worse.

Coyne gave me interesting advice about that.

I kept using my brakes to enter correctly the turns and I felt a lot of friction on tyres.
He suggested I lift off, a bit before I usually do, and I tried this.
This way I can take turns with no brake and less correction with steering.
Im a bit slower this way but thats how Im going to race, I think tyre wear will be much much less on the long run.

RE: Sim Racers 4 Life - BT20 Season - Round 8 - Indianapolis Motor Speedway - cosimo - 17-10-2014

Please can anyone share a setup?

I'm having strong difficulties preparing a setup that is even half-decent to drive (meaning not to crash in every wall).
I've gone the asymmetric route, but I just have near-zero experience with setups in oval races.

RE: Sim Racers 4 Life - BT20 Season - Round 8 - Indianapolis Motor Speedway - gorgias1976 - 19-10-2014

In a final sunday morning warmup since thursday's online practice I've gone for a realistic setup of the car considering it's an oval track. I've set positive cambers on the left wheels and raisen the rear suspensions so when the car is turning is more or less equal in ride heights.
In 10 laps tests it hasn't proved to be faster nor slower so I've decided to go for this "radical" setup for today's race. Hope I don't screw it.
