RSR Silverstone race reports
#1
Good turnout for this meeting , it was nice to see some old faces back again and we had some good tight racing with battles all through the field .

Race 1 – I had a reasonable start and held position which led to a long battle with DJ which was great fun and very intense , I knew I could lap faster if I could get past but his demon braking and a very wide car made my life difficult , after about 10 laps I made a pass stick thanks to a backmarker then started to reel in JP and Lee who were having their own battle , before I could get up to them they both decided they wanted the same piece of tarmac and tangled which gifted me 2nd place , ED was 5 secs ahead but I could make no impression on his lead .

Graphics gave me no problems , the only glitch I had was a small freeze just before race end .

Race 2 – A slow start for me JP and DJ blew past and I was left looking at the back of DJ again , another intense battle ensued and seemed to go on forever until finally my brake pedal was bigger than his at the end of the main striaght , phew it was like a gym workout racing against him , I could make no impression on JP so another 2nd place .

A couple of small freezes during the race but no other problems apart from DJ that is .
Understeer - is when you hit the wall with the front of the car
Oversteer - is when you hit the wall with the back of the car
Horsepower - is how fast you hit the wall
Torque - is how far you move the wall when you hit it

Yes it was a good battle. That overtake in first race from you, that was very good.
Yes, nice to see some old faces.
I think I was cooking the tyres after 5 laps as everyone else started to pull away.

The freezes, I think that is from other drivers having crashes. When someone loses a part of their car I get a small stutter. It does not matter if that car is on the other side of the track. I think this mod you see it more as there are so many bits to fall off like bumpers, rear wings, bonnets etc. At least it does for me anyway, can anyone say if that is the same for them?

Well I ran in the middle or back for both races and it got kind of rough but no matter. I do not like driving cars that have no stick to them but again no matter. My computer had no issues except for the driver sucks.

After two laps i was about to be lapped as i just couzld not drive with the terrible stutters. They actually did cost time. I did quite a few training laps and was not unprepared. Hoever showing up last minut after having to shortcut the power switch did not help either. I might test driving it on the monitor but that is just not the same.

I am surprised how many did give up on VR. Maybe an early VR generation thing. After a lot of reading on VR I postponed my purchase until the current generation. The downside of that is that it is quite performence hungry triggering further expenses now. I knew this would happen. I just hope the wheel and pedals hold together for another season.

I was only able to do the short race, but it went very well. Got a good start from pole with Lee and then @J-P SImard following. They seemed to be having a battle and I was able to manage the gap. Then near the end of the race I saw them spin into club which eased the pressure, but then @deecee52 set fastest lap so it wasn't the time to relax. Thankfully I kept position until the chequered flag.

Performance of the game was solid throughout. No framerate issues in any of the tracks we've run the 911 at. I have experienced the slight freeze @DJCruicky methioned when other cars crash but it wasn't noticeable in this race. My system is i7 5820K, 16GB DDR4, 980Ti into 3 G-SYNC monitors.

No problem for me on the graphics side, my system is a Ryzen 7 3700x, 16gbDDR4, GTX1660 super 6go with 3 very cheap 75hz monitor.

First race I missed my start and Lee took my place. After a battle that lasted several laps, I made an attempt to pass but missed and got Lee out. I'm sorry man for this.

Second race I finally figured out how to make a quick start and Dave and DJ both came out wide in front of me and I was able to easily take the lead and then brought the car back as they were fighting behind me.

As usual a lot of fun especially happy to see so many drivers, I think we will easily have 20 drivers minimum for the first race of the season.

We look forward to seeing you on the track!

If I can give you my opinion, I tried RVs a few years ago and went back to 3 screens, it really bothered me not to see my hands on the steering wheel and the buttons i pushing on. And above all, I was easily 3 tenths to half a second slower systematically with RVs.

But I think I'm going to buy the Quest 2 in the next few days for fun but not for the simracing.

Can't say I had any more problem than usual; occasional stuttering and all. I was running in VR (Oculus Rift) so my frame rates were limited to 90 anyway. Unfortunately with RF2 I never see anything like this. I have most things turned off or low. I did a ctrl+r out of curiosity and it was the same as usual. low of 20, max of 46 and average of 40, about half of what I get in iRacing with higher settings. Not sure what my problems are maybe my system is not powerful enough, Before I got VR I was running most settings at max. I had to turn a few things off in iRacing and most in RF2. Most of the time I just do iRacing. As well as RF2 I do have a couple more Steam games; FSX SE and Assetto Corsa. I still have LFS as well as the apps and free games that came with my headset. All these run fine on their default settings. My system specs are:

CPU Overclocked to 4.3Ghz - Stable OC on all CPU cores
CPU: Intel Core i5 6600
CPU Cooler: Corsair H80i v2 Performance Liquid Cooler
RAM: 16GB Crucial 2133mhz DDR4 (2x8GB)
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 4GB
PSU: 650W Corsair VS

Not sure if it's relevant but all but RF2 use Oculus Rift directly; RF2 uses Steam VR which I believe is not native Rift. When I am using RF2 both the Oculus and Steam VR programs are running. I can't just run Steam VR (AFAIK). Last time I tried to run a game without VR (discounting Xbox on big screen TV) I realy missed the depth perception and just couldn't get used to sitting in a "car" with just a monitor popping over the top of the wheel.

Been using VR for the several years now with no issues that couldn't be overcome with strategic settings. Experienced some jerky moments at Road America at 75 FPS so I lowered my headset FPS setting to 60 for Mid Ohio and Silverstone. (Thankfully Pimax allows the FPS to be set this low) At this frame rate I had no more "moments". For me FPS has always been tougher in general for rF2 than most games, even when I raced in pancake. Especially for many un-optimized mods.

Can't say for sure VR has made me any faster but it certainly hasn't made me slower. Pushing buttons blind was not too hard a hurdle to overcome for me. The hurdle of going faster is WAAAY higher. My biggest hassle in VR is typing in chat. I'm a hunt-and-pecker and I have to lower the headset to type. I'm recently retired and have considered devoting some time to learning to type properly. None of the downsides outweigh the awsomeness of VR immersion.

The promise of stereo vision and then full VR in gaming was always a dream of mine. I used oculus and Vive for a while even though the FOV was less than my triple monitors. When Pimax came out about 3 years ago with a KickStarter for a 170ish degree FOV headset I went all in. Now I can't play without the immersion of VR. That said, if anyone is thinking of getting a Pimax talk to me first... there are many technical and support issues that need to be known before jumping in.

Hello All,
It was nice to be back on track Smile I love this car.
Both races were very similar to me.
I stalled the car at start in the short race so I was last, several seconds behind, in the first corner.
My start was better in the long race but I have an incident in the first lap, with two cars that crashed right in front of me, before stokes.
So both races were about getting back my initial grid position,... which I did with a mix of few mistakes, steady pace (by my standards) and some good luck Smile
It was fun.

About graphics issues/performance.
I had a few scary moments just when I was being overlapped by the fast guys: short but heavy sttutering/freezing when we were side by side which made me miss my racing line/braking point. Fortunately It didn't cause any accident, pheeew...

About VR.
I like it and I had an oculus rift,... but I want much better resolution and performance...and for that I need to spend a lot of money.
I want a HP reverb G2 and a 3080...and that is too much money, maybe in the future Smile

See you soon

Nothing to report race wise for me. My wheel lost connection at the start of the sprint race. Apologies the all those who had to whiz past me as I tried to find first gear. My problem not the mod.

Thanks to Ron Odell for pointing out the trouble maker. I viewed the behaviour subsequently banned the moron. We rarely over the 9 years have had any issues with drivers which is a credit to everyone here.

We left this race open for anyone to join, it's proven successful over the years as we pick up the occasional member. All league races will be password entry for members only.

21 drivers on track at one point which is very pleasing to see. A lot goes on behind the scenes to find the right package so this was very pleasing.

Looks like we are good to go for the new season, it will be action packed so go and buy some new socksBig Grin and see you on track.
