I'm not a fan of Formula cars and have to admit I was quite disappointed when it was confirmed that we'll be racing them for a third consecutive season.
Since then I've raced in a few different leagues looking for something more in line with what I enjoy driving. But no other league has a community anywhere near as cool and fun as SR4L.
Grudgingly, I downloaded the 79 mod this morning and ran laps at Rouen for an hour or so. I was expecting it to feel like that godawful 76 mod we raced last season, but I have to say that I'm pleasantly surprised. The tire model seems reasonable and the overall feel is very immersive and solid.
Looking forward to driving this mod and seeing what the admins have in store for us in the upcoming season!
When in doubt, pass out.

Good to hear Shannon and thanks for the kind words. We are blessed with a very unique community. The mod it's self is pretty good, not perfect but very much a car that will provide good racing.

Did some laps to try the different cars again since the last test race.
Ferrari seems one of the best. No doubt a lot of people are going to be driving this car
Williams seems pretty quick and driveable, except at very low speeds it understeers a lot. The engine sound is pretty rubbish.
The Renault has a lot of grip, it just sticks to the road, but the engine takes a lot of getting used to. You have to push it really hard to keep the revs and speeds up, otherwise it just doesn't move.
The Brabham is undrivable for me, I can't get any feeling for the car.
The Ligier is still my favorite. I don't think it's as quick as the Williams or Ferrari, but it has a good compromise in feeling through both slow and high speed corners. I still dislike the engine sound though. These cars still sound like the noise was recorded on the side of a track with an old microphone and then stuffed into the mod lol

I've turned down the the engine sound in Audio Settings as low as 10% and worked my way up to find the happy medium. Around 20% seems to nullify some of that high pitched noise. The Ligier and Renault seem okay but the the others needed some tweaking. Needs some more testing but it's a start.

I have tried 2 cars so far, the Williams and the Ferrari, and here are my thoughts...
They sure are fun once you find a setup that works, the default one really is crap. These two cars seem very well matched, I think! I did a 1:51.0 in the Williams yesterday, and had to work pretty hard to beat it with the Ferrari today, and ended up on 1:50.7 even though it was far from a perfect lap. The Ferrari is harder to drive, because it's really oversteery on the throttle out from the corners. I had to increase diff power lock and detach the rear ARB to make it drivable. The Williams is much nicer and you can go full throttle a lot earlier, also it has much more downforce in general because even with wings at 1/1 it's quite slow in straight line. With the Ferrari I put wings at 4/7 to reach the same top speed on the longest straight (about 278 km/h). So the Ferrari can go much faster, but I never tried it with lowest possible wings, I like to have some downforce even tho it's Silverstone..
Don't have more time for testing now, gonna take a look at the other cars this weekend. I think me and Robert might enter this season as a team but he will probably do more races... I might do 1 or 2
Btw, could we have some rubber on the test server? looks green. Best thing would be to save the real road after a few people have done some laps, then put it on server and set "real road time scale" to STATIC!

It'll make it easier to compare the cars if we keep a consistent grip level indeed. And otherwise we just need to do more laps to put some rubber on the track :p
I kind of fear for the difference between the cars though. If the Williams and/or Ferrari prove to be the better choice above the others, we might end up with a championship with only 1 or 2 types of cars. It'll be more fun with a mix. Maybe we can equalise the cars with weight penalties or performance changes once we've established the differences in speed?

Now I have tested the Alfa/Brabham too (offline on a green track, because server is not updated ;P), and surprisingly managed a 1:50.5. I thought it would be slow, so that makes me happy, as I'm an Alfa Romeo owner IRL I might stick with this car... it's really ugly tho
Btw, do anyone here have the pdf file that came with the original mod, that explains how to setup cars with ground effect? I can't find it, would be fun to take a look at it even tho I don't believe rf2 will simulate ground effect so it's better to just drive it as a normal f1 car?

Same here
Understeer - is when you hit the wall with the front of the car
Oversteer - is when you hit the wall with the back of the car
Horsepower - is how fast you hit the wall
Torque - is how far you move the wall when you hit it

@gorgias1976 Sure you put the track to improve? We've been driving quite a few laps and no rubber gets laid down on the track

We continued to drive quite a lot of laps after you guys left and I think I can see a tiny rubber line now It might be set to real road time scale 0.1X perhaps?? Nevertheless, pls take a look at it Gorka

Maybe we should let a few AI cars drive overnight to put some rubber down
