Race report Texas World Speedway.
#1
The third event of SR4L’s ’66 F1 season features an oval race; Texas World Speedway to be precise.
Not familiar turf for most of the drivers, not in the SR4L league’s anyway.

Qualifying didn’t show many surprises besides from “newcomer” Dick Dastardly who claims the fourth spot on the grid, showing some nice speed. Gorka, Bart and Marcel divide the top 3 spots as could be expected. David Cruickshank and all week fast guy David Coyne complete the top 6.

The first race; rpm’s went up, heartbeats went up…..would a great champion come down?
It seems so easy; rolling start, left turn….and again….and again…..but no.
Though most drivers are okay, Giorgio and Paul touch and take an innocent victim in the person of the league’s only female driver Neela.
Neela’s spouse Bryan however, honors his new given nickname “mister lucky” as he steers just ever so slightly to the right, makes his way through the smoke and comes out at the other side untouched.
While in front the top runners are okay, chasing each other, George Mallis and David Coyne are not that lucky; they hook wheels and make it a gymnastics competition; David won that one, being the highest jumper but sadly for him, ending his race in the process.
Mallis pays his pit crew a visit and while doing so, he sees the whole field come by many times, declining his hopes for a good result on the Speedway.
Marcel overtakes Bart and smells victory as he comes close to Gorka, running in first. He also smells exhaust fumes being that close to the rear end of Gorka’s car.
He shows himself in Gorka’s mirrors off and on, but doesn’t have a change to pass the mighty machine, not before Gorka and Edwin touch as Gorka tries to lap Edwin.
Marcel comes by untouched but it’s a close call.
As Gorka chases the only remaining David, Paul Swire has a “Ricardo Zonta at Spa moment” as both cars pass him, both sides.
This pass suits Paul as he stays frosty in the middle, but later on, a pass and hit by just one car, sends him towards the wall, hugging it in a shameless manner and ends his race.
Mister sneaky, Nikos, is starting to like the left turns and is at P2, making up some quality time as he comes out of the pits still doing P7.
Another double pass, made by George and John on Cosimo, ends worse as Cosimo and John slightly touch and Cosimo notices there are now only right turns on the track…… Giorgio can’t avoid him and both cars end up on the green stuff that shouldn’t be driven.
Waving at them as he passes by is Vittotio, coming through the identified flying objects without a scratch.
At the end of the race, Bart is not doing well for himself as he shaves the wall just where the cushions are, making him a ballerina too and transforms his Devine Intervention machine into a worthless peace of steel only to be carried if movement is required.
As Bryan doesn’t seem to be able to get up to speed, Nikos has to collect the points for the team; he does it well by picking up the 5th spot, being only one lap behind the winner.
Marcel never gives up his P1 spot while Gorka made a good come back after being 7th coming out of his pitting session and David –being challenged for the title “mister consistent” by Nikos- completes the top three.

The second 42 lap race features the reversed grid, making David Coyne the pole man.
By his side is Cosimo, trying hard to defend his position but the competition is to strong; he soon falls back to P9.
The first lap is free of accidents but soon after that, it goes al wrong for three guys as Paul and Bart touch; taking David Coyne’s car in the process. David goes straight into the pits after that but has to put his car aside.
Paul and Bart have to end their race soon either.
George Mallis is doing himself a favor as he drives his TT f1 team machine from P6 to P4 right after the start only to make a small mistake right after that, making him lose a lot of positions.
Another one doing well for himself is Thanos Ziozias as he manages to get his car from 8th to 5th position; an impressive drive.
Meanwhile, the guys from the back are working their ways across the field; Dick makes it to P1 soon, Marcel soon gets to P2 and Gorka takes P3.
George makes a mistake all on his own, shows off by doing some backflips in the grass and pits; he falls back to the last spot.
Gorka inherits P2 from Marcel as the flying Dutchman is going for some new black and round. Gorka shows his speed and loses few positions as he goes in to get some service.
As Dick pits, Gorka takes P1, Dick falls back to P4 for the remainder of the race.
Near the last quarter of the race, Nikos and John find each other, sending John up in the air. As the car falls back on the track, John doesn’t hesitate to hit the throttle again and goes on, but when it seems he wants to pit after that, he finds his left front wheel in the grass, making him airborne again and sending him to the other side of the wall.
John doesn’t matter what stuff he drives on and proves that by setting an impressive speed through the green as he looks for an opening. He finds none and has to for vet. Nikos drives past John as he does the movement he really doesn’t want.
David Cruickshank has Marcel in sight, but doesn’t come closer, both are chasing Gorka for P1; the battle has ended as none of the top 4 positions are given away anymore.
Vittorio decides to do some decorating as he seemingly thinks the wall is to white; he scrapes some rubber on in twice and more or less slides into the pit lane. It looks like an accident, as he doesn’t stop for the all shaken up pit crew and drives by them and joins the race again.
We see the last lap and Nikos is doing okay just to get hit from behind by Dick, ending his race.
A thrilling race even though the top 4 is set for several laps now, but we witness a strong drive from Edwin (P5) and Cosimo (P6).
The title “Flying Dutchman” is still for Marcel, but he is really given a run for his money by Edwin who spreads his wings and learns to fly the same way pretty fast!

Nice to see it was not for nothing.

This was the last report though as it turns out I can't maintain myself.

Have some good racing guys, goodbye.

From the reply's I've read it certainly was not for nothing. I think I can speak for at least 50% of the regular members and say that it was a great report and made very interesting reading.

So as far as I am concerned Wim I would love you to keep doing this it is a great addition to the community.

I woud love to keep doing it too Paul. Didn't want to talk about it but okay.

Writing the stuff is fun, but I was in the server, driving some laps, things didn't work out and (afterwards) I got into a quarrel, yet again.
Happened before, still happening, probably will in the future too. Time to do the wise thing as my "position" here has become undoable.
Every time I do some driving; it goes wrong.
My ideas are shot down, offers are turned off, writing is okay. I spend 9 hours(!!) watching replays, looking up standings, sorting it al out, writing......
I don't mind, but as all other stuff can't be and racing is undoable; I can't show my face anymore.

Just the way it is.
