So what did I do wrong when installing the new skin? I re-named it when I put it in the proper folder on my computer. Is the skin already on the server with another name, causing a conflict?

It shouldnt be a problem, just try to keep the name of skin low on letters and ALWAYS have "alt" in it.
Like, JIMalt.dds
