1979 Fun Event at Suzuka
#2
Was just about to write a small report Wink

I haven't had a ton of practice yet with the mod, but I was way off-pace. Guess I wasn't the only one; Ed and DJ were 3+ seconds ahead of the rest in their Ferrari's!

I am still having love-hate affair with the Ligier, but things are slowly getting better.

First race I had a good start and was up into 5th by T1. After a few laps chasing Gorka I had a small spin and nudged the front wing against the wall. It was only light blue in the damage HUD, and the pit menu said no repairs were necessary/possible. I don't know if it was the damage or the tyres being outside their operating window, but from that point on I struggled like crazy. I also ran on the hard tyres, which turned out to be a mistake. After skating on an ice rink for a few laps I crashed and lost a wheel. Not a good start Smile

The second race with random starting grid put me on pole. That was neat! I quickly had DJ and Ed on my tail, and despite still being ~2s a lap slower than their best lap times, I managed to keep them behind (initially). I could see where the Ferrari's were a lot quicker, most notably under braking, slightly higher top speed and through the Degner curves. As I'm still learning about the car and it's a test race, I tried to experiment with the lines and hopping the curbs, but that caused me to go wide out of Degner (2) , and I lost the position to DJ.

I kept Ed behind for a while, until I had another slight off out of the spoon curve when I counter steered a bit too much. Later on Ed also made a mistake entering the spoon curve, and I was back in P2. I had another off in the hairpin when I outbraked myself. These brakes are tricky!
Ed and I had another great fight and a very exciting moment going into 130R, but I kept the position, and P2 over the line. That was great stuff.

I can't really say all that much about the cars, as I haven't driven them a great deal yet.
The brakes are tricky, especially when the tyres start to wear.
Slow speed corners are very difficult, as even a tiny bit of throttle makes the rear go mental.
Looking at the replay, I can see Ed sliding that Ferrari around like a mad man. Currently I am try to avoid sliding them too much, besides gently kicking the tail out on corner entry by going off-throttle.
There is still a huge amount of understeer or rather 4 wheel slides when I hit the throttle. The whole car just really pushes wide, and I haven't been able to get the hang of the corner exits yet.

For now the best driving style (in the current state of the setup) is using the off throttle to steer the car into the corner, keep momentum with a small amount of throttle, and then only accelerate once I'm really at the exit. Going on the throttle too early is immediately punished by sliding wide.

The hard tyres are pointless, the softs in the second race were much much better, despite heavy wear.
