Hi all.

Here are some basic rules just so we are clear on what is expected.. SR4L has always been a race friendly group but in the unlikely event that a Race Director has to adjudicate we need some basic guide lines.

Basic League Rules.

Non nonnegotiable's

To keep an even playing field and also to keep in line with the kind of racing we are trying to achieve here please abide the following rules.

It is not allowed to use software that assists driving ie; starts, grip, power etc, plugins, or macros that automatically engage the clutch or gears when the start lights turn to go. The reaction to the start lights needs to be 100% down to the driver without the aid of software emulator(s). The use of any such assists will result in disqualification.

It's not allowed to overtake drivers off the track. Driving down the side of the road overtaking slower cars in front of you is not permitted. The exception to this rule is if you need to avoid a crashed car. Places need to be given back if you think you have overtaken someone off the track.

On the start grid while waiting for the lights, it is not allowed to shuffle half a meter forward. The game lets you do this without penalty, but here at SR4L, we do not allow this. If you have moved forward by mistake, and if there is still time, press Esc and rejoin the grid. That should put you back on the correct place.

Things to be mindful on race day.

1. Drivers cannot replace a lost wheel/wheels after accidents. Please exit the race.

2. A badly damaged car that is unstable to drive must exit the track. Drivers pitting with slightly damaged cars should be very careful returning to the pits. This is the drivers discretion to make a safe call.

3. Re-entering the track safely after an incident or exiting the pits must be done with caution. Track maps, mirrors and pit exit lights are a big help in this case.

4. Chat during qualifying or a race. A big no, no. Please wait for the race to end.

5. Practice starts during the countdown period to a race not allowed.

6. Races will only ever be restarted by officials i.e., server down or similar mass incidents that effect the grid.

7. If a driver misses the start for whatever reason unfortunately it is simply bad luck and not a reason for restart.

5. In and endeavour to keep racing fun, defensive driving by weaving when defending under attack into a corner is not permitted. Try to make one move left or right only. One of the hardest things in online racing is knowing exactly what is around you under pressure.

8. Abuse in any form will result in suspension from all future League events.

Penalties may apply upon review.

Please find below helpful information on how to pit at Spa Belgium 1966.

You will need to have assigned a 'Request Pit' button and press it in good time before pitting.
There no clear boundary between track and pits, so this requires a request in order to take a pitstop.
Your Red pit box will NOT show if you do not do this. It's also too late to press request if you have already passed the pit entrance.

The pitcrew will not service your car if you do not use the pit entrance shown above

INSTRUCTIONS WHEN EXITING PIT AT SPA.jpg (Size: 300.32 KB / Downloads: 2)
Keep to the pitlane speed limit until you get to the end of the brick wall, not the end of the yellow line.

WHEN RACING
On a normal lap when NOT pitting, don't cut the entrance of pit lane.

INSTRUCTIONS WHEN RACING AT SPA 2.jpg (Size: 341.75 KB / Downloads: 2)

You can cut inside the yellow line using the full width of the track only AFTER the pit entrance.
Please do not do this if there are cars in the pitlane for their safety. Hitting one will see you disqualified.

How to serve a penalty at Spa Belgium 66?
Same way as other tracks, but just like above you have to press the 'Pit Request' button first.
* Drive-Through, Press pit request button and drive down the pit lane without speeding.
* Stop/Go, Press the pit request button, drive down the pitlane then stop at your pit box for 10seconds.
Make sure you know what type of penalty you have because if you pit when you should have been doing a drive through the pit crew will service your car with fuel and tyres again and you would still need to serve your penalty.

What if you have a Stop/Go penalty but want to do fuel and tyre stop first?
The game defaults to serving a penalty first. If you want to tell the pitcrew to service car instead, for example you are running out of fuel then press the pit request button to bring up the below menu.

  20211110184210_1.jpg (Size: 85.73 KB / Downloads: 27)
Use cursor keys up and down to move box to STOP/GO then use cursor keys left or right to change this setting from Yes to No.
You need to do this before entering the pitlane, tricky to do when driving.
Of course you will still need to re-pit again to serve Stop/Go afterwards.

Further notes to be aware of:
There is a track bug on the last corner (la source). If you over shoot the corner and go very wide, the game can sometimes give you a cut warning or a drive through. Be careful not to overshoot this corner. This is fixed in the community made League-Friendly version of the track.

Recommendations:
When running the track at Max track detail settings there are white posts along the side of the track that are easy to crash into.
By lowing track detail makes them disappear. We recommend that you do this.
It is recommended to practice pit stops before the event.

Hopefully that covers everything you need to know about Spa Belgium to avoid getting penalties.

This is a required read for anyone participating in SR4L events.

Qualifying Sessions

Stay out of the way of drivers who are on flying laps when you're on an out lap, or any other non-useful qualifying lap for that matter. With a full field the track can get crowded. It can be hard find the space to complete a clean flying lap sometimes.

It’s all the worse if people who are on an out lap try to ‘race’ those who are trying to complete a clean flying lap. Be a sport. Let others complete their flying laps as cleanly as possible. Also if you have spoiled the lap you’re on - by spinning, a really bad section, whatever - then also consider staying out of the way of others for the remainder of your non-useful lap.

Exit the pits carefully. Watch the red light at the end of the pit lane. They warn you that car(s) on the track are approaching. Some drivers announce their egress onto the circuit with a ‘PO’ (Pit Out) notice though the chat facility. Since at SR4L, chat during qualify and race is forbidden, so we don't want you to do that. Try to ease yourself onto the track so that you get a view in your mirrors of what’s coming up behind. Do not rudely charge onto the racing line if that is not necessary. Get to speed and be aware of other people on the track before taking the racing line.

All Sessions:

Get off the track and out of the way ASAP if your car is non functional.

If you crash, spin out, run out of fuel, whatever, so that you’re on the track but not moving or moving very slowly for where you are, then move off the track as quickly as you can. If you’re bound to retire after an incident, then retire ASAP. Treat this as a matter of urgency, as if every fraction of a second counts - and it often does. Your race may be done but others are still trying to compete as best they can. Running into your stationary or slowly moving vehicle will not make their day. At the very least get away from the racing line, and do it with all haste.Of course there may be some circumstance where a damaged car might still be repaired or capable of affording some benefit to its driver. Just take the first occasion to safely get to the pit and let the pitcrew repair your car.

Do not overdrive your heavily damaged car whilst endangering other drivers. Common sense has to prevail of course, and no one can expert you not to do everything reasonable to enhance your own result. But, if your current situation is not served by staying on the track, then please get off, and get off as fast as you can.

Show yourself in their mirrors.

rFactor has the huge blind spots - see below. To state the obvious, if the driver in front of you can’t see you then don’t be surprised if they crash into you, or cut you off so you can’t avoid crashing into them. As much as you can, show yourself in the mirrors of the car in front.

Of course once you decide to overtake a car you have to drive into their blind spots. But even then, if they get a good view of what your movements are immediately prior to your disappearing, they’ll have a much better idea of your probable position and likely immediate actions, and what they need to do to try to avoid contact. This is not quite the same as real life perhaps, but real life enjoys a much better visual range.

Trying to stay away from an opponent’s mirrors may be a valid tactical ploy. I.e., trying to rattle them into an error by making them guess where you are. But in rFactor this is asking for trouble. Its visual limitations require us to play the gentleman here, if only for our own survival and enjoyment.

Never run into the back of someone in front of you.

This is probably one of the silliest things one driver can do to another. There’s few excuses here. If you are behind then you have the responsibility to drive in a manner that will not lead to you running into a car ahead. It doesn't matter if you're faster, think you have the right to be let by, are more talented, or think that all slower drivers should not hold up faster drivers. If you're behind someone then that's your tough luck. You have to earn your pass the same as anyone. However frustrated you may be, or whatever, it is your responsibility not to run into the car in front of you.

Even if their braking zones occur earlier than yours would normally, then tough luck. You have to anticipate these possibilities and drive accordingly. If you've tried everything, braking, gearing down, changing line, etc., but can see you're still going to collide with a car ahead, then you should drive your own car off the track, crashing yourself out of the race if necessary, if that's what it takes to avoid such a contact.

The in-front driver must not do malicious braking of course. I.e. deliberately slowing down inappropriately to rattle a following driver. They are required to drive with all haste and due propriety. But while doing so within their limits they are entitled not to have to worry about whether a following driver will run into them. Being able to follow another driver without running into then is something you have to learn to do.

It often takes keen judgment and many times is not easy. You want to be as close as possible, to snatch a pass if a chance comes along, but you need to be far enough away to respond to the ahead driver's manoeuvres, evasively sometimes. It does take practice and it is a skill. But it’s an essential skill for successful enjoyable online racing. You can practice with friends, in non-serious races, or with the AI cars offline. Offline, pick a car that's slower than you and try to hang on their tail for 10 laps or so without passing. You may surprise yourself at how much your skill in this area needs to be improved. Avoid close racing when it’s not necessary.

Not only does very close driving give you very little time to react if the need arises, it also increases very much the likelihood of a internet-lag-time caused collision. In racing online there is always a risk of registering a collision in close driving even without any perceivable contact - due to internet lag. The closer you are to another car the more likely this will happen. The general rule for the careful and respectful driver would be, not to unnecessarily drive too close to another, especially whenever there is no point. E.g. In situations where there is no possibility of passing anyway. You're asking for trouble if you do, even if you don't actually do anything wrong.

Use Clear Body Language.

If someone is following you closely looking for a place to pass, and you kind of drift along with ambiguous movements about the track, or you sort of close the door but still leave the inside line half open, then you just might unintentionally lure the following car to try a pass that's only half on. Alternatively, if as soon as a following car gets anywhere near your rear quarter coming up to a corner, and while they are still in your mirrors, you make a firm and clear movement towards the inside line, and stick there, then they will know that your intentions are to close the door and drive the defensive inside line.

Such a clear defensive move will leave them in no doubt not to try a risky inside pass. This is just one case. There are others. The thing is ... always try to convey a clear message by your driving style so that surrounding drivers get a very good idea about your intentions. Body language used well can be almost as clear as having indicators on your car.

Practice the Other Lines Before You Have to Use Them.

If the first time you have ever tried driving around the outside of a certain corner is in a frantic race situation when you're racing toe to toe with someone, then you'll be in unfamiliar territory in the middle of a high stress precision driving situation.

A bad place to be. Before a race comes up, just try doing a few laps of the circuit hugging the left-hand-side of the road all the way around and then do a few hugging the right-hand-side. At the very least do 1 or 2 laps against each side of the road. You'll be surprised at how much less likely you are to crash while trying to hold road position if you are at least a little familiar with how the outer and inner lines feel.

Overtaking: The Non Contested Pass

A non contested pass is simply a pass where you're happy, for whatever reason, to let an overtaking driver go past with the least hindrance to them as possible. Your reasons may be that you don't want to risk an incident due to an overtaking battle, the overtaking driver may be known to you as a notorious accident causer, or you may be being lapped - in which case race etiquette requires you to do what you can to expedite a clean quick safe pass for the lapping driver.

Whatever the reason, there may be times when you want to let someone past.To let someone past uncontested, drive against one side of the track and maintain that position until they’ve passed. You need to use clear body language here. Moving from side to side trying to stay off the racing line, for the sake of the passing car, is the worse thing you can do. What’s important is not wether you’re on the racing line or not, but whether you’re driving a predictable line. Pick a side of the road to move to, usually the one you’re nearest to at the time, then religiously stay against that side until the car has passed.

You might even try slowing a little to expedite the pass, as sometimes a quick pass can benefit you as much as it does the passer. But don’t slow down too abruptly of course and do not lift off in or directly after turns.During the race, if you're being lapped by another car you'll be shown a blue flag indicator in the left top corner of your screen. These are advisory flags to let you know you’re about to be lapped and you're expected to do the gentlemanly thing and move out of the way. In rFactor you may not always see all the cars behind you in your mirrors at a particular time.

There may be several unseen cars close by around your tail. You may only ever see whichever one happens to be in your mirror's field of vision at the moment. This has special significance when you're being passed - with or without blue flags being waved. If you're being lapped, perhaps with blue flags but whenever, be aware there could be any number of lapping cars right on your gearbox even though you don't see them. What can happen is this ... You see a car coming up in your mirrors, maybe you also see blue flags, you think " there's a car lapping me I'll move over to let him pass", you move to one side of the road and let him through, you then move back onto the racing line and BAM, you've hit someone.

It turns out there was more than one car lapping you. When you moved over to let the first one through the others tried to go through too, as you'd expect. But while you were on the other side of the road, they were out of you mirrors, you simply never got to see them. This can really take you by surprise, and them too.

All you can do here is be as careful as possible, look around if you're able too, try to shy a glimpse, or listen for more engine sounds. They can help by trying to show themselves in your mirrors before going through. Be aware that just because you see one car go past that may not be the end of them. Whether after a blue flag or whenever, as the same limitations always apply. The drivers doing the lapping/passing should also bear in mind these limitations.

You (passing drivers) be aware that the car you're lapping may have absolutely no knowledge of your presence what-so-ever. Be careful. You should always try to show yourself in the mirrors of an ahead car before trying a pass.
Overtaking: The Contested Pass
The contested pass, or the pass done in anger, whatever you want to call it, is arguably one of the most difficult things to do cleanly without incident in rFactor. Battling for position, passing and counter passing, wheel to wheel racing, is also the most fun thing to do.

The problem with close racing of any sort, contested passing included, is largely one of what each driver in the situation can see of the other. It’s just that there's a lot of guessing going on about exactly where and how close you are to another driver. The sim’s range of vision is much less than real life. There are huge blind spots to contend with. The contested pass then is all about what you can and can't see.

Monaco pit rule clarification:

- Obviously, you need a 'request pit' button to make a pitstop here, unlike other tracks where you can just enter pit and the red pit spot appears automatically.

- The moment you request pit, the pitlane becomes active for your car. The pit speed limit has then to be taken in account, even if you decide not to pit while it's active.
If you don't pit, but do cross the white line accidentally and break the speed limit (by overtaking someone for example), you'll receive a penalty by the game.

- When pitting, stay right of the white line. Obviously, if there's a car in front of you, you need to pass it and cross the line. No penalty will be given. Tuck in again when you can.

- Exiting pit, stay on the right till after T1, especially when there's traffic coming.

- You must not drive at full speed down the main straight then pit. Even though the game allows this without penalty, SR4L deems this as cheating. This rule is here so a driver with their box close to pit exit gains no time advantage over a driver with their pit box close to pit entrance.

- To serve a drive through or stop and go, you have to request a pit stop. From then, the procedure is as normal. For a drive through, just drive through as you normally would and for a stop and go, you stop at your spot.

- Available pit spots at this track is 16.

If these rules are updated, I'll add when and what at the bottom of this message.

Basic rules/recommendations for ovalracing at TWS:

1a.: I strongly advise you to press Tab to enable players tags above the cars. This way you'll be able to see the safetycar more clear when it pulls into pits and the player which you must follow at warmup lap will have a yellow nametag as well. (see #3)

1b.:Turn your mirrors on by pressing '3' key until you have the center and two outside mirrors in the top of your screen, this is a necessity as long as we don't have a working spotter.

2: Map buttons to look left and right (ingame>settings>controls>camera tab> look left/look right)

3: While doing warm up lap, stay in line of the grid position you started from, so either left or right, behind the player with yellow nametag. We call this ''doublefile''. Keep about a car's length distance.

4: Don't weave, zig zag or whatever you might call it, don't brake>pull up>brake etc. , it wont have much effect on tiretemps and causes unsafe situations.

5: You can start racing when the chatwindow comes up with 'Green flag!'
Overtaking before s/f is not allowed.
Therefore it's important that everyone but especially the frontrunners react to the chat message in time, if not the pack will bunch up and disaster will be more likely

6: When racing, try to avoid apron (Inside part of the track, left of the white line). It's not entirely illegal to run over the light grey, inside area of the track, simply because it's not always avoidable but since pitting drivers use that lane, it should be common practise to avoid at all times. Better safe than sorry.

7: If someone you try to pass is not appearing in center mirror, you did not complete the pass and he or she will probably still be at the left or right of you. Hold your line and leave room for your opponents.

8: When pitting, get on the apron as per screenshots:

pitlane speed limit starts here:

9: When exiting pit, stay on the apron and merge at the backstretch as per screenshots:

10: Again stick to the apron with 4 wheels as much as possible, if you do cross the line, make sure you at least attempt to tuck in again, failing to do so may result in a penalty

11: Don't overtake while on apron when you are entering or exiting pit. It may happen you having a slow car in front exiting pit but that's the risk of pitting and chosen strategy. Overtaking the car means crossing the line and is not allowed.

When defending your position in a race you are not to Zig Zag along straights to prevent being overtaken. This is classed as blocking.

A single maneuver is allowed to defend your position but moving side to side (blocking) is not allowed, when in the approach to a corner you are allowed to hold the racing line to prevent being over taken, but not to move off the racing line to force anyone off the track. If a driver negotiates a corner illegally and gains a place, he should wait at least one more corner after giving back the position before launching another overtaking move.

You can utilise an aerodynamic ‘tow’ from the car in front. This is achieved by moving into an opponent’s slipstream – a pocket of low pressure air behind a car through which the following driver can move more freely and gain a small speed advantage. Allowing a faster approach to the next corner.

If a driver cannot complete a pass on a straight, he may elect to overtake into a corner under braking. This requires an enormous amount of skill from the overtaking driver – not only is he likely to have had to move offline on to a more slippery part of the track, but he must also judge how late he can leave his braking. Get it wrong and he could overshoot the corner, spin off or – worse - make contact with the car he’s trying to overtake. As you might expect, tyre grip often plays an important role in these situations with a driver on newer tyres having an advantage. Similarly, a driver on fresh tyres will stand a better chance of overtaking the car in front in the traction zone out of a corner, particularly if he’s set up the move in advance by taking a different racing line into the corner.

A driver trying to fend off an overtaking move from an opponent must rely on his ability to pick the correct braking points and cornering lines. Typically this means reducing the angle available for the car behind to use going into corners where there is a substantial risk of being passed. Providing that the driver ahead only changes his line once going into a corner (not deliberately attempting to block the car behind) this is a perfectly justifiable form of racing, and with it a driver in an inferior car can successfully hold off a faster rival.
