How do you customize? The fewer distractions the better, for me. :o

Press Alt+space while on track, then go to "select objects" (by pressing ENTER). Just select the first one which is "position". Then you can move it with your mouse and place it where ever you like.
When you are happy you go to next one by using your left or right arrow on the keyboard. You can go through everything available this way and hide things you don't want by pressing ENTER. Also there are some things hidden by default, so just press ENTER again to show it.

So basically:
Ctrl+space: hide/show trackmap
Alt+space: hide/show menu
Left/right arrow: next object

When you are finished just click left mouse.

There are also several different LCD and tire temp indicators available. Go to menu (alt+space), select "objects" again, then go down to "LCD" but without selecting it. With your right key you can go through all the different LCD's available.

Btw, If you want to remove the little annoying overview track, you have to go to the trackmap config file (rfactor2/plugins/trackmap/trackmapconf.ini) and change "modemap" to OFF.
