You can pull away, then press esc and return to garage. Then if you click race again you will be put back in the grid and won't get a penalty. You can do that as many times as longs as the timer is above zero.
Anyway, after a busy week with no practice, I'll get back begin the wheel this night or maybe tomorrow early morning. I'll make sure rfactor 2 hasn't changed any of that feature.
