Yep. An hour long race is about as much as anyone seems to want - so low wear rates and fuel rates don’t challenge the better drivers and there isn’t much incentive to try different race strategies - everyone would be able to just race flat out and it’d be a bit like modern WEC.
We’re finding that in the half-length practice races, most tracks this year can just be completed on a single tank and set of tyres - but this requires careful management at x4/x7. At x2 even the full length races would be in reach of that... The slow refuel rate (1 litre per sec) really concentrates the mind - if you lower the fuel multiplier such that a full length race is within the range of a tank, you eliminate a lot of strategy potential.
The races this season have turned into fuel conservation challenges, it’s true. I’m quite enjoying that, to be honest and it means that less experienced drivers should be able to get into the mix via the hare vs tortoise conundrum.
Participation is very low though. Dunno if it’s the race length, day of the week, fuel/tyre multipliers or what.
I’m sure Jonathan (and I) would like to hear any technical details that could provide a ‘better’ balance for the future, Damian
